Fun Finds | Phone Apps

I have always been a proponent of keeping things “stock.”  Car stereos, my hair color, and until now: the apps on my phone.

In the last month or so, while perusing CNN – Tech, I’ve come across a few articles with suggestions about fun apps to try. Of course, being a total cheapskate, I ignored any apps that were paid (what if I don’t like it? or get bored with it? just money flushed!). In my general filtering process I’ve come across two that tickled my fancy: Sunrise and Mailbox.

Mailbox is an app that allows you to clean up your inbox (only offered with gmail). Now this sounds simple enough but it is kind of amazing how many emails can accumulate.

So here’s the deal, the goal of Mailbox is to get to “inbox zero daily,” which basically means that all your messages have a place. Whether they’ve been archived (different than deleted), or sorted into easy-to-understand categorizes to reference later, the ultimate success is being able to see the daily photo they post for people who’ve successfully cleared their inbox.

Personally, I never really understood the purpose of “all mail” vs. “inbox” in Gmail. Now, it makes far more sense: the inbox is just for the stuff you are getting right now or may need right now. Everything else doesn’t need to sit there taking up screen/mental space, just put it into the archives for safe keeping…. DUH! (can you say: major lightbulb moment?!)

The only downside to Mailbox: it’s in Beta so…. just like the early days of gmail, you’ve gotta wait your turn. When you download the app and register for the service you get to see a lovely countdown of where you’re at in the lineup and how many poor unlucky souls are behind you.

So that’s Mailbox. All kinds of fun swiping and cleanliness for your email. Now, onto an app I just downloaded today…. Sunrise.

Sunrise is a calendar app, once again designed to work with Google calendars, Facebook calendars, and LinkedIn. So far what I like about it is the fact that you get benefit of multiple views of your calendar at one glance or with simple swiping motions. Plus, I really love the coloration.

I was successfully able to set up a true Gmail account calendar and a Google Apps-based calendar (in case you were concerned about not using the standard google interface).

I’m definitely going to try and get used to Sunrise (there are fun icons that appear, but I’m not sure what they all mean), but so far I’m digging the interface.

Let me know what kind of fun finds you’ve stumbled across lately in the comments section!

Lovely Lily

it’s been a rough few weeks around my house.

as some readers of my blog may know, my dad has been valiantly battling bladder cancer for the last year and things have simply gone down hill lately.

so I apologize for the lack of blogging, however family comes first.

in the mean time, we do receive flowers frequently and I had to share this beautiful lily that opened up. (excuse the photo quality, it’s from my phone.)

A Little Taste of Nature

It’s been a busy January so I haven’t been able to put pen to paper (fingers to computer?) for my blog as often as I might have liked. Fortunately, I have been able to soak up some of California’s wonderful weather and take a few hikes outside with Buddy.

I thought I’d share some of my favorite Instagram photos from my time in the golden hills of California.

Fun Finds | Pathbrite

Do you wish you could showcase all your awesomeness somewhere on the web without having to design your own website?

Of course you do!

Okay, sorry to start off sounding like an advertisement, my brain isn’t in full writing mode yet (only 1 cup of coffee down). Late last night, while perusing Facebook, an article from Mashable caught my attention.  Specifically it was this article.

Now, I am not a graphic designer / artist / video guru, so I always assumed portfolios in the traditional sense were not really necessary for someone with my skill set / career goals.  But then I read this article about Pathbrite. And wow, were my socks knocked off.

Basically you can categorize your important life experiences/skills into a visually pleasing portfolio that is quite intuitive to use.  I’ve begun mine, however there is probably a lot to learn about how to best utilize this for job search / online presence. Always a lesson waiting to be had….

Anyway, I couldn’t make mine small enough to capture a great screen shot and still include everything, so don’t mind the less than wonderful shot here, but definitely go check my page out to see how easy it is to interact with.  You can simply select the categories on the top to see which of the images is relevant to that section.  They are color-coordinated, so it is super easy.

Either click here to visit my portfolio or click the image below.

As you can see I’ve chosen 4 categories: Travel, Social Media, Work Experience, and Life.  They are obviously not the most inventive of category names, but as this is supposed to be utilized by anyone who comes across it on the web, I wanted it to be logical.  Social media, for instance, simply allows a “reader” to see images of my Pinterest page, my Klout page, Twitter, and my blog — where you are right now :)

Travel has pictures from my study abroad last summer (my new computer doesn’t have pictures on it yet, so I had to utilize their Facebook importer — which, to be honest, needs a little help).  Work experience brings up my resume (PDF, downloadable) and the logos of the companies where I have worked. Lastly, Life showcases my graduation from University of San Diego. Again, a lack of photos and an eagerness to get the portfolio set up resulted in a “rough draft” if you will of my Pathbrite page.

UPDATE: this post was seen by the wonderful people of Pathbrite and they featured my portfolio and blog on their site! check it out at: http://www.pathbrite.com/2012/08/21/portfolio-spotlight-megan-eilers/

So now that this is by far one of the longest postings I’ve done in a while, I’ve got one bit of exciting news to share before signing off.

I GOT A JOB!!!!!

At long last (in my mind — I only graduated at the end of May, so I’m ahead of the curve), I am employed. And let me just say, it feels damn good. I will be an associate at Valerie Frederickson & Company, a HR services firm in Silicon Valley. Yay Me!!!

Alright, apologies for the lengthy post. Hope everyone has a great week, and be sure to comment below about Pathbrite. Let me know if you’ve used it, how you like my portfolio, and if you think digital portfolios will bring an end to the hard copy resume in the future?!

Back in the Game

Hey Everyone!

It has been FOREVER since I last posted a blog–and of course, now it is finals time, so I’m procrastinating and paying attention to my blog again! I’ve decided to keep up with my blogging more.  Yes, this has been a resolution previously, but this time I’m determined!  It is too late to write a REAL blog post, but I will definitely be doing some later this week (after my tests are out of the way).  I hope all you readers are doing well and keep on visiting my blog :)

For tonight (or today, technically), I will leave you with this: an adorable photo of a siberian husky I found over @ pinterest
